14 Men grooming mistakes and how to avoid them

Follow these tips and you will be ready for a professional encounter or an unexpected romance.

You know that rugged, manly man stereotype that’s becoming progressively popular lately, right? While it seems to be a growing trend, rugged doesn’t mean that your look should appear slapdash! You should always keep yourself groomed and thoroughly clean, regardless.

It is okay to have a long majestic beard, as long as you keep it tidy and clean. The same goes for any hair, including the ones on your head. This is a no-brainer, but you wouldn’t believe how many guys out there will just “let it be”.

The main problem about body hair (and facial hair, too) is that hair works like a natural defense against microorganisms and bacteria  a.k.a. dirt, but if you don’t take care of yourself, it will become quite messy and no one wants that.

To help you keep an awesome image, let’s cover 14 of the most common mistakes and easy ways to avoid them!

1. Unkempt body hair

You don’t need to shave down to bare skin, but always keep your body hair nicely trimmed with a one or two on the clipper, and do this every three to four months. Do it on your chest, arms, legs and especially down there.

2. Unibrows

Look out for those unruly eyebrow hairs. It’s alright to have a little bit of hair in between, but if your eyebrows are meeting! you have a problem. Make sure you trim your eyebrows to give it a good frame and get everything in proportion. There is no need at all to shape them though, or they will look super feminine.

3. Take care of your skin

If you want to present the best possible version of yourself, pay attention to your skin, especially your face. Pamper yourself with a skincare routine and make sure your skin is not too oily, or dry, or aging prematurely. Wash and moisturize your face every day and don’t ever forget the sunscreen. They are amazing to protect you from wrinkles and sunspots.

4. Get frequent haircuts

Taking too long in between your haircuts, can have you looking really sloppy. Overgrown hair is very hard to style as well. Get your haircut every two or three weeks, maybe even four if your hairstyle is a little longer. On the other hand, if you have more of a shaved or buzzed hairstyle, make sure you get your haircut every couple of days up to a week.

5. Ear and nose hair

This one can really be visually unpleasant. Don’t let your hair show up out of your ears or nose. All you need to do is take a good look in the mirror every couple of days and check out if anything needs trimming and that’s it. Leave your trimmer next to the mirror and you will be good.

6. Unkempt facial hair

Talking to someone whose facial hair is so long that it starts creeping into the lips, or towards every direction, is very off putting and distracting. It’s ok to have a beard or moustache, and it doesn’t matter if it is long, as long as you keep it trimmed, especially around the lip area. Don’t forget to shave your neck as well, to keep a clean, fresh, distraction-free look.

7. Dirty hair

If your hair is always dirty, greasy or ungroomed, you will probably gross people out on a daily basis. Dirty, greasy hair is awful, so make sure you always wash it and style it before you go into public. You deserve to look like the self-respecting man you are.

8. Bloody gums

Having bloody gums or food in your teeth is not acceptable. It is unattractive and unhealthy. Go to the dentist regularly, get your teeth thoroughly cleaned every six months and always floss after your meals. You can even use toothpicks! Of course, excuse yourself and go to the bathroom to look in the mirror to take any trace of leftover food from your teeth before anyone notices. Don’t sit in front of everyone chewing your toothpick.

9. Bad breath

This is a no-brainer. No one deserves to be around someone with a foul breath, it repels everyone around, and it is easily avoidable for the most part. Just brush your teeth regularly! And take some mints with you, take them whenever you feel like your mouth is not tasting or smelling so well.

10. Stink is unacceptable

Don’t try to cover funk up with deodorant or douse yourself with cologne, it will only make things worse. Shower regularly and apply deodorant right after you dry yourself. Take care not to exaggerate your cologne or perfume, because that is as stinky as a missing too many days without a shower.

11. Dirty, long finger and toe nails

These are as bad as jagged, short bitten nails, have your nails nicely trimmed and clean, because shaking a gross hand or even just being around someone with dirty nails is really off putting.

12. Please, moisturize!

Don’t you dare think that moisturizing is for girls only. Pay attention to your hands, elbows, knees and feet to keep them from chapping and cracking. Make it a habit to smear a little lotion after you shower and you’re good to go. Unless you do want to look like a dry prune.

13. Neck hair

Even if you’re well dressed, with a great hairstyle and smelling good, a hairy neck can be a deal breaker. You can take care of it yourself when you are shaving, just take a couple of swipes back there every couple of days.

14. Cracked lips

This is one of the worst and most overlooked mistakes men have out there. It is incredibly distracting to talk with someone with dry, bloody lips. Take some chapstick with you, and apply every time you feel the need.

If you follow these tips, you will always be on your best, ready for a professional encounter or an unexpected romance.
